EAP Core Functions

There are seven basic functions provided by Employee Assistance Programs, referred to within the industry as EAP Core Technology. Although many programs provide additional services, these functions have been identified as being the core components of an effective EAP by the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. They are:
  1. Consultation with, training of, and assistance to work organization leadership (managers, supervisors, and union stewards) seeking to manage the troubled employee, enhance the work environment, and improve employee job performance; and outreach to and education of employees and their family members about availability of EAP services.

  2. Confidential and timely problem identification / assessment services for employee clients with personal concerns that may affect job performance.

  3. Use of constructive confrontation, motivation, and short-term intervention with employee clients to address problems that affect job performance.

  4. Referral if employee clients for diagnosis, treatment, and assistance, plus case monitoring and follow-up service.

  5. Consultation to work organization in establishing and maintaining effective relations with treatment and other service providers, and in managing provider contacts.

  6. Consultation to work organization to encourage availability of and employee access to employee health benefits covering medical and behavioral problems, including but not limited to alcoholism, drug abuse, and mental and emotional disorders.

  7. Identification of the effects of EAP services on the work organization and individual job performance.

Many NASA programs have expanded on EAP Core Technology to include:

Threat Assessment focuses on conflict management and violence prevention in the workplace. This may include workplace violence training, workplace and personal safety assessments, participation on crisis management teams, and conflict resolution training.

Critical Incident Stress Management is an identified process for responding to individuals following a traumatic event such as an employee death, an incident of workplace violence, or a national disaster. Research has shown that employees who participate in a debriefing following a traumatic event return to their previous level of functioning more quickly than employees who do not have access to a debriefing. (See CISD for more information.)

Support Groups are often facilitated by an EAP counselor around a variety of issues impacting a segment of the employee population. Examples of topic areas include grief and loss, care giving, parenting, and substance abuse / alcoholism. Groups may be for a pre-determined number of session or they may be open ended for as long as employee interest exists.

Back to List

Wellness Promotion often includes the integration of several worksite resources including physical health and fitness. Information related to general wellness topics such as stress management may be presented via workshops, lunch and learns, or monthly newsletters.

Return to Duty Assistance allows the EAP to assist in the re-integration of an employee to the workplace. If an employee has been out of the workplace due to an illness, a family issue, military duty, or a disability, the EAP counselor provides recommendations on how the employee can most effectively return to the workplace. This may be especially important if the reason for the absence was sudden and unexplained.

Concierge Services are convenience services which assist employees in meeting everyday needs such as home repair, pet care, vacation planning, auto maintenance, and entertainment. This service provides referrals services and in some case immediate access to these services.

Myth: All NASA EAP's are structured very differently.

Fact:
While all of the EAP’s have different features, they each operate according to EAP core technology and therefore provide similar services.
